This weekend, a group of students from the 4th year of Secondary School and 1st year of Baccalaureate at Liceo Europeo participated in the regional session of the EYP (European Youth Parliament).

EYP is a European platform for political debate and exchange of ideas in which students from different countries participate. It is an opportunity for international dialogue that allows young people to be part of change.

Through participation in different committees, our students put their knowledge into practice to propose solutions that exist in the real world, working on skills such as logical reasoning, critical thinking, and public speaking, always in English.

Julia’s committee addresses issues such as how to legislate to protect animal rights in the European Union. Their proposals have taken into account areas such as the treatment of animals in the agricultural sector and the legal framework for companion animals.

Leire faces the challenge of creating a legal framework to control technological applications such as Dall-e in her committee. Can a work produced by artificial intelligence be considered art? This was the central question that this committee started with.

Alonso has participated in the committee that is considering whether European Union countries should increase their investment in nuclear energy research and generation. In the midst of a global energy crisis unprecedented since the 1970s, and with a geopolitical future that looks unstable, it is necessary to find ways to reduce the dependence of European Union countries on external energy suppliers. How can nuclear energy be part of this solution?

Marianna has been part of the committee that discussed how to make the fashion industry more environmentally sustainable. Specifically, her committee addressed the growing impact of fast fashion on our planet. This committee was tasked with debating whether to regulate the activities of companies whose production processes are carried out in countries outside the European Union.

The committee Malena was part of addressed the measures and legal frameworks that can be adopted to improve the mental health of our healthcare professionals. Following the Covid-19 crisis, many studies have been conducted on this topic, and all have agreed that more support is needed for a group that works under very stressful conditions. Its main objective was to propose measures to mitigate the harmful effects of the physical and mental health problems suffered by many of our doctors and nurses.

Ángel was part of the committee whose challenge was to legislate the vaping sector. The exponential growth of this market in recent years has meant that the legal framework in many countries regarding these products is non-existent or inadequate. Should vaping be treated the same as tobacco under the law? Should there be a European legal framework, or would it be better for each country to regulate it according to its own criteria?

The Liceo Europeo School has a long history in this debate competition; our students have qualified for the national final on numerous occasions and have been chosen to represent Spain in international sessions. This August, for example, our student Aitana has been invited by the organization to represent Spain at the International Session in Azerbaijan.
