This Sunday, the streets of La Moraleja were filled with solidarity, commitment, and sporting spirit on the occasion of the 5th Charity Race of the Liceo Europeo Foundation, which this year has donated its proceeds to the Pablo Horstmann Foundation, an organization dedicated to improving children’s health in vulnerable communities.

With more than 500 participants and over 400 registered runners, including students, families, alumni, residents of Alcobendas, and athletes of all ages, the event has become one of the most anticipated gatherings for the school and local community, as well as a historic participation record for the school.

During the morning, races were held in the 5K and 10K categories, with the winners being David Martínez and Cristina García in the 5K, and Sergio Santos and Francisca Marisol Almirón in the 10K, respectively. In addition, special trophies were awarded in different categories: the club/school with the highest participation was, as expected, Liceo Europeo. The Children’s races took place afterwards.

At exactly 9:00 a.m., the starting signal was given by the Alcobendas City Council, a collaborating institution since the initiative began, represented by the Councillor for Sports and former Olympic athlete Jesús Tortosa, and Cristina Capdevila, from the District Delegation for Urbanizations and Cooperation. Before the countdown, Tortosa shared with attendees a brief overview of his sporting career, marked by his participation in several Olympic Games. A testimony that reflects the spirit of this event, where sport and solidarity come together.

Among the highlights of the day was the participation of Paralympic triathlete José Luis García “J”, who not only ran alongside participants but also served as a living example of effort, resilience, and motivation for the younger generations. Referring to the course, he expressed his gratitude for initiatives such as the race, describing them as “wonderful.”

On behalf of the school leadership, Gonzalo Inclán, headmaster and also a participant in today’s race, explained that “at Liceo Europeo we understand education as a journey that goes far beyond the classroom. We are delighted to see so many families, students, and alumni sharing this day around values that define us: commitment, perseverance, empathy, and sport.”

For its part, the Pablo Horstmann Foundation, recipient of the funds raised, thanked all those who made this edition possible for their support and involvement. The proceeds will be fully allocated to child health and nutrition projects in highly vulnerable environments. Belén Manrique, Director of Communication and Marketing at the Foundation, highlighted that the funds will support the education of children in Uganda who previously had no access to schools in the region. “More than 400 children from broken families or living on the streets will now have access to education.”

The race organization was supported by Club Corredores, which once again contributed its technical expertise and involvement in all phases of the event. Jorge Benito, technical sports director of the club, highlighted both the participation of minors in the race and the pride in all runners’ performance, noting that “the course is tough, with elevation changes, although the area is very beautiful and the route is intuitive.”

The 5th Charity Race of the Liceo Europeo Foundation was not only a celebration of sport, but also a testament to the transformative power of education when combined with social commitment.

LICEO EUROPEO is a private coeducational school founded in 1982. It currently has more than 1,300 students.
